Alum’s magazine for success is success

When a business is successful or a restaurant is a hit, word spreads quickly, especially on an island. However we don’t always hear about the people who are the driving force behind the effort.

The Pacific Edge Magazine is a business and lifestyle magazine that features Hawaii’s young professionals and hot trends in business, culture, lifestyle, and art. Published every quarter, it distributes 10,000 copies statewide.

The magazine’s creator and co-publisher, Naomi Hazelton, is a winner of the 2001 Pacific Business News Top 40 Under 40 Award. She developed the concept while at HPU working on a practicum for her master’s degree in corporate communication.

Hazelton describes the publication as “a cutting-edge business and lifestyle magazine whose primary focus is to spotlight young professionals and give insight into their success.”

She is originally from Kauai, where she worked in the promotion department of a local radio station and wrote a column for the Garden Isle newspaper. She also worked for Visitor and Elite magazines.

Co-publisher and Director of Operations for Pacific Edge is Jamie Giambrone. Originally from New York, Giambrone met Hazelton last year at a launch for Smart Magazine, at the time a communications officer in the Army, he had been home one week after returning from a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Starting from scratch, the partners created the 68-page premiere issue which launched in January. Its main objective, according to Hazelton is “focusing on young people making things happen.”

They launched their third issue in July, and announced that their partnership is no longer only a professional relationship. The two will marry this fall.

Amy Stanley, a communications major at HPU and Pacific Edge’s first intern, said that “Working on the premiere issue was a real opportunity for me to see how publishing works from the ground up. Jamie and Naomi were helpful and open to my ideas. I learned a lot about deadlines, correspondence in the corporate world, and event planning. Plus, I’ve gotten four stories published.”

Stanley said her education at HPU helped prepare for the internship. “I was in charge of the launch parties for the first issue of the magazine. I got to use my graphic design skills to create fliers and invitations. On top of that, I used writing skill that I acquired during my time at HPU.

“Group work is also important,” Stanley added, “not only for students, but in the ‘real’ world.”

According to Stanley, HPU students could definitely benefit from reading Pacific Edge.

“One of my projects as an intern,” she said, “was to research professional organizations in the Islands. There is a full list of them in the magazine, which is always great for networking.”

Shana Logan, a visual communication major at HPU and finalist in HPU’s first film festival, “Shorts on the Rock,” said: “Pacific Edge is an important networking tool for young, local professionals like myself. In Hawaii, it is often about whom you know.”

On the cover of the summer issue is Food & Beverage Director of Royal Kona Resort, Keith Mallini, who is also known for turning around the Sheraton Waikiki’s Hano Hano Room and introducing Skyline, a posh, cutting-edge nightclub venue every first and third Saturday.

Pacific Edge also features a Night Life Diaries section, with lots of pictures of the latest hot night spots such as Skyline Lounge, Bar 35, and Fashion 45.

Primarily distributed through direct mail, Pacific Edge sells for $5.95 at King Fort Magazines and Borders outlets on Oahu, Hawaii, and Kauai. It is also available complimentary for patrons of Indigo’s, on Nuuanu Street, and Bar 35 on Hotel Street.

Giambrone invites the public to come to Pacific Edge’s launch parties, three of which are schedule for each new issue.

“We invite the public to our events not only for a complimentary copy of the magazine,” he said, “but also to meet the staff.”

Publisher gives ‘edge’ to working professionals

A new magazine, Pacific Edge, highlights Hawaii’s current trends in business, culture, lifestyle and art, and is the brainchild of Kauai native and Kauai High graduate Naomi Hazelton.

The current edition features Kaua‘i’s popular golf course, and includes a story on young professional Matt Humphreys of the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa. Artists Anna Halldin-Maule and Tom Maule are on the front cover, highlighted by the photography of Sara Wall of Kilauea.

Hazelton said they will feature professionals from the Outer Islands in every issue.

Since the cover couple is from Kaua‘i, they decided to launch the magazine on the island. Hazelton and co-publisher and fiancé Jamie Giambrone wrapped their Kaua‘i launch of the magazine at the Blossoming Lotus restaurant in Kapa‘a earlier this week.

Pacific Edge is the result of Hazelton’s defending of her practicum while earning her master’s in corporate communications at Hawaii Pacific University.

What she essentially had for her practicum was a 64-page, glossy magazine focusing on business people between the ages of 22 and 39. She and Giambrone realized they were on to something.

“There was a high demand there among all the 30 print publications here,” Hazelton said. “It’s a cutting-edge, lifestyle publication that specifically spotlights young professionals who are up-and-coming in Hawai‘i.”

Giambrone said that all the work and foundation for the first issue came from Hazelton. “The groundwork had been laid out,” he said. “We presented the mock ups and laid it out. We just kind of took the mock ups and really took off from there.”

To get Pacific Edge to stand out from other publications, Hazelton and Giambrone decided to directly mail the heavy, high-quality, all-color magazine to Hawai‘i businesses. Copies can also be found on the newsstands, at Borders Books, Music, Movies & Café in the Kukui Nut Marketplace in Lihu‘e, and at other bookstores and other outlets.

They’ve also decided on having multiple-issue launches at different venues throughout the state. “If you’re on Kaua‘i, we just had the launch at the Blossoming Lotus. The next one might be somewhere in Poipu,” Hazelton said. “That way we’ll be reaching the different demographics in addition to the direct mailing.”

Hazelton said she hopes young professionals will be able to network through this publication.

They’ve sponsored business associations such as the Public Relations Society of America Media Blitz and supported the Sales and Marketing Executives International Salesperson of the Year banquet.

The magazine is published out of Honolulu.

New magazine will target Hawaii’s young professionals

Pacific Edge Magazine, a new consumer magazine aimed at young professionals, launched its first issue this month.

The publication, printed in Hong Kong, features the lifestyles of working professionals between the ages of 22 and 39 and promotes Hawaii’s restaurants, fashion, travel and leisure activities, sports, the arts and nightlife.

Publisher Naomi Hazelton of Kauai says this is the only magazine that solely features young professionals. She says it was the brainchild of her practicum for master’s in corporate communication.

“I really wanted to showcase and spotlight Hawaii’s young professionals, young entrepreneurs, young CEOs — those up-and-coming who are able to take risks and make ends meet.”

“Hazelton is distributing 10,000 free copies to businesses statewide. It’s also available free at a few restaurants and Honolulu nightclubs. She plans to solicit paid subscriptions next year.
