Silence, tears, laughter- no matter their response, viewers are free to feel what comes. “As Roger Ebert said, ‘It’s democracy in the dark.’” Says Chuck Boller, executive director of HIFF, the Hawaii International Film Festival. “The lights go down, and everybody’s equal. It’s like reading- it draws you in and you can have your own reaction to it. There’s nothing like being in a theater.”
