Art in the Dark

cboller134Chuck Boller of the Hawaii International Film Festival

Click here to view online magazine Cinema is an experience. It gives viewers the chance to absorb and react to a film in the relative privacy of a darkened theater. Silence, tears, laughter- no matter their response, viewers are free to feel what comes. “As Roger Ebert said, ‘It’s democracy in the dark.’” Says Chuck Boller, executive director of HIFF, the Hawaii International Film Festival. “The lights go down, and everybody’s equal. It’s like reading- it draws you in and you can have your own reaction to it. There’s nothing like being in a theater.”

golfAdvances in the Game of Golf

Click here to view online magazine The first history of golf was written in the 1400s, but most historians believe that the game, or at least a semblance of the game, was played much earlier. One theory on how it started is that shepherds tending their flocks started swinging their wooden crooks at odd rocks or pebbles to kill time in the pastures. At some point, a hole in the ground was introduced to serve as the target, and the game was on. It wasn’t until the early 1900s, however, that someone decided to put a cup into the hole—before that, a golfer simply dug a hole with his hand. The wooden tee wouldn’t be introduced until the late 1800s; golfers would simply fashion a “tee” out of soil. Of course, caddies were generally given this choice assignment.

Click here to view online magazine “It’s so cold I can’t even enjoy it. How can you expect me to like this?” “This is way too warm. Go and get me some ice.” Although these quotes sound shockingly similar to the dialogue of my recent relationships, they’re pulled straight from the daily grind of a wine professional. The temperature at which wine is served in restaurants (and relationships) is the subject of frequent and rigorous debate. Personal preference is always the correct answer, but there are guidelines for optimum wine enjoyment.
